The sun shines more in Puglia than anywhere else in Italy, and has a lot more to recommend it besides. Full of sleepy whitewashed villages of traditional trulli, handsome masserie in endless olive groves, vineyards that rival those in the north and a history of conquest, it’s a region that once visited, will draw you back again and again.
It’s rich in architecture –visit Lecce, the “Florence of the South” or the elegant seaside towns of Gallipoli and Otranto – has spectacular and otherworldly landscapes – you’ll find the country’s longest subterranean network of limestone caves at the Grotta Bianca – and a warm and welcoming people.
The region is one of Italy’s most fertile and is also the largest olive oil producer in the country. That can only mean one thing. You’re going to eat very well. Large dishes of marinated vegetables, bursting with flavour; soft and creamy burrata and all manner of fresh pasta will keep you smiling. With the longest coastline of all the country’s regions, expect to find some stunning coastal scenery and fabulous beaches too. From white pebbles to soft, powdery sand, Puglia has more than its fair share of them with blue flag status.
