The Romans built villas on the shores of the Lakes, and they were an essential part the Grand Tour itinerary in Victorian times. And all for good reason. Quite apart from their striking beauty – mountains dropping dramatically into mirror clear waters, picture perfect towns, villages and grand villas with stunning gardens dotting their shores – they offer something for everyone.
The climate is welcoming, there’s an excellent selection of watersports, the hiking in the surrounding peaks is fabulous, and of course, the cuisine is first rate.
Garda is the largest and possibly the most scenic, with Maggiore and its tiny islands, coming a close second. Como, with its air of glamour has attracted its fair share of artists and celebrities, whilst those in search of quieter shores head for Orta with its beguiling island village of San Giulio. Milan, the gateway to the Lakes, is one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan cities, where art and culture jostle with designer boutiques in the Quadrilatero d’Oro – a shopping district like no other. The splendid gothic cathedral is a sight to behold inside and out, whilst Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper is tucked away in a quiet basilica.
