Menorca

The laid back Mediterranean lifestyle

With more white sandy, sun drenched beaches than its Balearic sisters, pine fringed rocky “calas”, and a delightfully rural interior dotted with white washed villages, Menorca has an understated and discreet charm. Indeed, its coastline is some of the loveliest in the Mediterranean, where you’ll find little deserted coves, only reached by a tiny path. And as for the colour of the water – it has to be seen to be believed.

The capital, Mahon, on the east of the island, sits on a ridge above the Mediterranean’s largest natural harbour and is remarkable for its Georgian houses – remnants from British rule (we also left a gin distilling tradition). Over on the west, the island’s historic capital, Ciutadella is a myriad of tiny streets, Moorish palazzi, coloured houses and a harbour lined with some of Menorca’s best restaurants. And in a sheltered bay in the North, lies Fornells, where little boutiques and tapas restaurants can fill a few hours. The restaurant scene in Menorca is on the rise, and it’s not hard to find excellent places serving deliciously fresh seafood, (caldereta de llagosta – lobster stew – being the island speciality), sobrassada and all manner of local meats and cheeses, with chefs giving dishes their own personal twist. Whilst the lifestyle here is low key and sedate, there’s a wealth of activities, from every type of watersport, to walking or cycling the many paths and trails that criss cross the island or meander round the coastline. If you head into the interior, you’ll find a pristine landscape with pine forests, rolling hills and ancient stone monuments dating back thousands of years. This is the Mediterranean island to visit for a slower and more seductive pace of life.
