One of the most evocative cities in the world, Venice should be visited at least once in your lifetime. Standing magnificently on more than 100 islands in a lagoon in the northern Adriatic, she’s a vision of grand renaissance and gothic palazzi, bell towers, atmospheric piazze and elegant bridges, all connected by a labyrinth of canals and alleys. There’s little wonder why she’s named La Serenissima.
Arriving by boat will be imprinted on your memory for ever, as will gliding down the Grand Canal and out into the lagoon with St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace to one side and the island of Giudecca and the church of San Giorgio Maggiore ahead of you. Step into one of the countless alleys and wander quiet canals with no crowds; visit the Accademia for some of Italy’s finest art; head out to some of the further islands, and eat like a local by stopping at little bars that serve cicchetti – traditional Italian street food.
