Baroque towns and charming fishing villages that feel as though they’re from a bygone age; glamorous seaside towns with restaurant terraces that look out to the mainland; Greek temples and amphitheatres scattered about the countryside and pretty beaches at the end of little winding road. And seen from vast distances, is the smouldering presence of Mt Etna – Europe’s largest active volcano.
The island has its own style of cuisine – with fresh seafood, aubergines, lemons and tomatoes featuring on most menus, and each region with a speciality pasta.
