Stretching along the Sorrentine Peninsula, the Amalfi Coast has inspired artists and poets for centuries, and has long been the holiday destination of the cognoscenti. Only 34 miles in length, its dramatic vertiginous cliffs, pastel-coloured villages spilling all the way down to pretty beaches, grand palazzi, villas and gardens, all make for mesmerising views.
It’s also home to the freshest seafood and some of the smartest luxury hotels in Italy.
The best way is to arrive by boat, although the thrill of driving along the hairpin roads through heavily scented lemon groves looking down at the shimmering Med is an experience in itself. Positano is the most glamorous of the coast’s 13 villages; the eponymous Amalfi has plenty to occupy the visitor for a day; Ravello seduces with its stunning vistas, whilst the smaller ones remain underrated and quieter, each with their own unique charm.
