Martinhal Sagres – Sagres, Portugal

Martinhal Sagres – Sagres, Portugal

Although slightly larger than our other hotels, we couldn’t let this one go! On the southwestern tip of Portugal – the very edges of Europe, Martinhal Sagres has all the facilities of a resort, with the feel of a beachside retreat. And most importantly, it has everything you could think of to keep families of all ages happy for a week or two. Parents can properly wind down, whilst toddlers and teens have endless fun and adventure.

With a wide, sandy private beach, there are water sports galore, and for those looking for some land-based fun, there’s tennis, cycling and horse riding and a very relaxing Spa. We love the villas here. They give you the flexibility to self-cater, and to use the fabulous choice of restaurants, and the resort’s takeaway service. The staff are so smiley and friendly and could not be more helpful – making you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Easy to get to, this remote part of the Algarve has a very unspoilt vibe and the dramatic landscapes are worth exploring.

rooms

Dotted around the Martinhal Sagres grounds, surrounded by landscaped gardens, and lining the beachfront, the suites, villas and townhouses are architecturally stunning, giving the resort a village feel. Spacious and supremely comfortable, each one is designed around families. From  hotel rooms with private balconies looking out to sea, to self-catered apartments, to Ocean Houses and Luxury Villas with private pools, Martinhal Sagres has a room type to suit every travel tribe.

food

Portugal has one of Europe’s most delicious cuisines, and Martinhal Sagres celebrates all the traditions and flavours in style. Start the day at O Terraço with views out over the Atlantic, or try their modern Portuguese dishes throughout the day. Os Gambozinos serves Italian favourites, and As Dunas is the place to go for the catch of the day. Some of the restaurants offer children’s buffets and have play areas so parents can savour lunch and dinner and a glass or two.

You won’t go hungry here… the Pool Bar serves snacks all day, and there’s even a pop-up grill in the village square. And if you want a break from self-catering, you can enjoy the resort’s takeaway service.

activities

There’s so much to do here for both adults and children alike. The resort’s own beach is wide and sandy, with a variety of water sports on tap, from windsurfing to paddle boarding, and from kayaking to sailing. There are four heated pools, not including the separate toddler pools, tennis courts and every sort of bike possible available to rent, with guided tours regularly organised. And of course, there’s the Spa for some well-deserved pampering. We especially like the treatment list here – mummy body wraps, daddy massages and teenage facials. Martinhal has left no stone unturned!

family

Children and babies are given the warmest welcome here. All the accommodation is family friendly, with interconnecting rooms and suites and family sized villas, with three toddler pools across the resort. There’s a crèche for babies, as well as five kids clubs catering from two to seventeen, all with a range of activities specifically designed for each age group. From pizza workshops to T-shirt designing to surfing lessons, the club can be used for just one day or a whole week.

There’s plenty for older kids too outside of the club – from tennis to horse riding, and there’s even a BMX bike track. Guests with babies can pre-book all the equipment you need, from nappies to sterilizers, whilst stair gates, cots, baths and buggies are all on hand for you to use. The kid’s menus are carefully created, and the chefs will even make purée for babies.

sustainability

Sustainability is very much built into the architecture, the grounds were constructed using sustainable materials. It relies largely upon solar power, whilst electric cars are slowly phasing out other vehicle types, encouraged by charging points in the car park. Organic produce features heavily on the menu here, whilst the hotel also actively engages in many conservation projects.
