Rosa Alpina, An Aman Partner Hotel – Dolomites, Italy

In one of the most spectacular ski domains in the world, the Rosa Alpina has been looking after guests since the 1930s. Run by the Pizzinnini family, now in its third generation, it has a legendary reputation for exceptional hospitality, and without question, for its food. Traditional Tyrolean décor blends effortlessly with contemporary design, exuding an air of exclusivity and charm. From the moment you arrive, you’re made to feel part of the family and as though you’re the only guest there.

This is how service is done! Gourmets have flocked here for decades, not only for the celebrated St Hubertus, but also for the plethora of Michelin starred restaurants in San Cassiano itself. Surrounded by the soaring Dolomite peaks, with their ever-changing colours; enjoying faultless luxury and service, it’s little wonder that guests come back year after year.

rooms

Bright and airy, with light wood panels, mixing traditional and contemporary décor and filled with antique local furnishings, the rooms and suites are simple, yet supremely welcoming. Located above the restaurant, is Chalet Zeno, a three bedroomed modern retreat, complete with sauna and hot tub. With everything you need, it lends an element of total privacy, with its own separate entrance, whilst still using all the facilities of the hotel. Or, for a night, book the Trugnei Cabin – high up in the mountains, the hotel’s very own luxurious refuge.

food

Not one, not two or three, but four restaurants. And all serving extraordinary cuisine, from traditional pizza to three starred Michelin gastronomic excellence. St Hubertus is the creation of Norbert Niederkofler – whose dishes focus on seasonal produce and ingredients from the mountains themselves, and also has a rarely awarded Michelin green leaf in recognition of the sustainability of his food, and the use of renewable energy in its preparation.

The extensive wine list also means that every dish is paired faultlessly. Make sure you reserve a table well in advance. You’ll find more trattoria style cuisine at the Wine Bar and Grill, but where the flavours of the mountain are still celebrated. We love the intimate atmosphere of the Fondue Stube – and no stay here is complete without at least one visit. Start the day before hitting the slopes, at Limonaia, where the breakfasts will certainly see you through until lunch, or even beyond!

activities

Skiers have over one thousand two hundred kilometres of pistes and four hundred and fifty lifts on the doorstep of the Rosa Alpina, with its location in the Dolomiti Superski and access to the Sella Ronda . Non-skiers will find countless trails for walking or snow shoeing and the more adventurous come here for ice climbing. If that’s a bit too strenuous, then the Spa will definitely appeal. In fact, the two Spas.

One has an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gym and treatment rooms offering an indulgent range of massages and therapies, and the other is an adult only with a sauna and hammam. There’s a private twelve seat cinema room too, a library and billiards room.

family

Families are given the warmest of welcomes here. Rooms can interconnect, or extra beds added; there are children’s menus and a babysitting service. There’s also a dedicated playroom, complete with climbing wall as well as a family friendly indoor swimming pool.

sustainability

The hotel is conscious of its environmental impact. Local producers supply whatever seasonal and organic ingredients are not grown on site, whilst eco-friendly cleaning products and LED light bulbs have been introduced. Discarded flip-flops from the spa are also sent to an NGO that works with a migrant centre so they can be repurposed.

Summer

A long standing destination for those who love wide open spaces, unspoilt and unrivalled scenery and adventure, the Dolomites promises all this and more. The Rosa Alpina is open from June to October, and makes the perfect base for those who want to explore this stunning part of Italy. Hiking, climbing, mountain biking and golf are all on hand, and St Hubertus can be found each Sunday “unplugged at 2,000m” at the hotel’s own Piz Sorega mountain hut. And of course, the Spa is open too.
