La Bamba de Areco – Argentina

La Bamba de Areco – Argentina

You could be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back in time, or were on the set of a film at La Bamba de Areco. Once a colonial mansion – one of the oldest estancias in the country – it is now a sophisticated boutique retreat, reaching the heights of Argentinian sophistication and glamour. The main house and outbuildings have been artfully restored, with reception rooms brimming with antique furniture and artefacts, lending a feel of yesteryear.

This is the region where the gaucho tradition began, and the walls are full of pictures of its rich equine history. The estancia is a refined, yet laid back retreat – you can watch polo matches on the lawns; lie back by the pool or ride across the estancia and surrounding pampas on horseback.

rooms

The rooms and suites are immaculately styled, with a distinct colonial feel. Dark wood floors, four poster beds in many of the rooms, antique furniture and black and white tile floored bathrooms, they are airy and soothing. Some can accommodate an extra bed. Each one is different, with views out over the grounds, polo fields and pampas beyond. And in keeping with the style, there are no TVs or WiFi.

food

Gastronomy is an important part of life at La Bamba, celebrating rich Argentinian culinary traditions. Meals are communal, with large tables set around the property from which to enjoy the asados (barbecues), and the fine selection of wine. Lunches are legendary and extravagant, whilst dinners have many courses of perfectly executed dishes. People travel from Buenos Aires just to eat here.

activities

A stay here is to take it down a notch or two. The estancia is home to an international polo team, and during the season there are frequent matches on the lawns. At other times, you can watch their fast-paced practice sessions. Don’t miss the opportunity to ride across the pampas in true gaucho style, or if you prefer, there are mountain bikes available.

The colonial town of San Antonio de Areco is not far away, and definitely worth a visit for its architecture, cobbled streets, restaurants and artisan shops – fine leather and silverwork being a particular skill here.

family

Whilst families with children 12 and over are most welcome, this estancia is a very grown-up feel to it. Older teenage children will love the riding and gaucho lifestyle.
