One&Only Le Saint Géran – Mauritius

One&Only Le Saint Géran – Mauritius

Le Saint Géran was Mauritius’ first luxury hotel. It set the bar very high and hasn’t lowered it since. To start with, it probably has the best spot on the island, on a sheltered private peninsula, with a crescent shaped lagoon fringed with dazzling white sands on one side, and the Indian Ocean on the other. You’ll pinch yourself when you arrive. Wide, colonial style terraces on stilts over the water, whitewashed open plan villas, gently swaying coconut palms, the seductive emerald ocean and vast daybeds beckoning you.

It is slick and laid back all at the same time, where exceptionally trained staff look after your every need – the suites come with their own butler. It has all the trimmings of a tropical heaven and it’s very easy to see why guests return here again and again.

food

Le Saint Géran is a destination for gourmets, with extensive menus and flavours from the island and around the world – there’s something for every palate. Its restaurants also have some of the most beautiful settings we’ve seen – on the beach; on stilts over water and terraces amongst the palms. La Terrasse, the chic pavilion at the centre of the resort is where it all happens, with vast breakfast spreads and a delicious menu of Mauritian and Creole influenced dishes, in a buzzy atmosphere.

Mouthwatering tapas style pan-Asian food is served at the resort’s signature restaurant – Tapasake – where diners can watch the chefs at work. Le Saint Géran has one of the island’s finest steak restaurants – Prime – serving organic beef and seasonal Mauritian seafood. Lunches at La Pointe, right on the tip of the peninsula, are relaxed and laidback, and it’s the best place for a sundowner. We love L’Artisan and its coffees and pastries – the tables piled high with cakes and treats are a sight to behold. And if Mediterranean food is a passion, you’ll be in for a treat at Le Badamier. The resort offers an excellent private dining service. You can eat in your suite, on a secluded part of the beach, or on a boat organised by the concierge service – almost anything is possible.

activities

Mauritius has much to see and at Le Saint Géran you can explore locally or venture further afield, along the coastline and into the interior. Kayak through the mangroves to spot indigenous flora and fauna, or take a guided hike or a quad bike into the rainforest clad mountainr. Climb Le Morne Brabant; explore the Black River Gorges or see the spectacular Tamarind Falls. The range of water sports in the resort is huge, and many are complimentary – waterskiing, snorkeling, diving, windsurfing and paddle boarding.

As you would expect, the One&Only Spa is a real sanctuary, with an almost endless list of treatments, many of which are based on natural island ingredients. There’s yoga and strengthening classes, a fitness centre and the resort’s team can devise an individual programme for you, focusing on diet and exercise. Families of all ages will find a huge range of activities – one of our favourites is the fishing trip where you get to cook and eat your catch at the end of the day. In between, you can sail around the Ile aux Cerfs, snorkel, and explore deserted stretches of beach. And of course, there’s always the option to stay poolside and be truly pampered.

family

Families can’t fail to have a fabulous time here. The KidsOnly club for children and One Tribe for teens, with their extensive programme of activities, from snorkeling trips to karaoke and from treasure hunts to kickboxing – allow parents some precious down time. There are three pools from which to choose, and the beaches could not be safer. There are tennis courts and coaching, a football playground and mini golf and glass bottom boat trips. The rooms and suites can interconnect, the restaurants have children’s menus and there’s a babysitting service. Everything is covered!
