Jashita – Tulum, Mexico

Jashita – Tulum, Mexico

If you’re looking for a little slice of quiet, barefoot beach luxury, Jashita is the place to stay. Perched on a remote and unspoilt bay, with an endless backdrop of palms and jungle, it looks out over the reef and its cobalt blue waters. This boutique hotel is a sophisticated mix of pared down simplicity and high end luxury, with a definite Zen-like feel and a hint of Venetian, thanks to its creative owners.

Poking out from the lush foliage, down to the beach, it has distinct desert island overtones, and comes with a team of staff who look after your every need. It’s a place where you instantly forget the every day, and become very accustomed to tropical beach life.

rooms

Cool and fresh, decorated with earthy tones and linen drapes, the rooms and suites ooze beach shack sophistication. Standard Rooms are intimate and romantic, with palm covered verandas looking out over the tropical gardens. Each of the Superior Deluxe Suites is different – some come with a garden view and others look out over the ocean – but each comes with a large terrace and plunge pool. For families, the Superior Double Deluxe Suites have two kingsize beds and plenty of living space.

Each one has a private terrace or veranda with a plunge pool and looks out over tropical gardens. The Water Front Suites come pretty close to tropical beach paradise as possible and are right up there for a romantic week away. Hammocks on the veranda; steps from the beach and total seclusion – they tick every box. Then there are the Honeymoon Suites. Spacious and atmospheric, with ocean facing plunge pools and plenty of outdoor living space, they are wildly romantic. The Penthouse Suites are ideal for families, sleeping up to four guests, with the option of connecting to other suites for larger groups.

food

Spilling out onto the beach, with a rooftop bar, Pandano Restaurant serves excellent Mexican Italian fusion cuisine, with a wide international menu too. Ingredients are sourced locally – you can see where the seafood comes from – and much of it prepared in front of you. Move between here and the beach bar for a fresh juice or cocktail, and book a romantic private dinner on the beach one evening, under the stars. And just along the beach is a lobster shack that you’ll want to visit more than once.

activities

Understandably, many guests never leave the property. For soaking up the Caribbean sun, wandering from beach to pool to rooftop bar for a margherita, really can fill your days. Each room comes with snorkeling gear for exploring the reef just off the beach – the array of marine life is really quite beautiful. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get to swim with a turtle or two.

Part of the Mesoamericano Reef that runs all the way from the Yucatán Peninsula to Honduras, it also offers spectacular diving, which you can do from Jashita. An early morning or evening paddle board or kayak is a rather lovely way to start or end the day, and perhaps head out into the Caribbean for some deep sea fishing. The hotel runs regular boat tours for sight seeing too. There’s yoga on the beach and a choice of indulgent treatments at the Spa, where you can enjoy traditional Mayan treatments. Being so close to some of the region’s most spectacular archaeological sites, a trip to one or more of them is highly recommended. The clifftop ruins that run for miles along the coast at Tulum are stunning, as are the temples at Chichen Itza, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, just two hours away. The extraordinary cenotes are also a must visit. Just ask the concierge team, and they can organise your entire day, or week.

family

You’ll find no specific facilities here for children, other than a separate pool, but it’s an ideal retreat for families, if only for its heavenly location and beach. Babysitting is available and children love the different water sports on offer.

sustainability

The area around Tulum has embraced sustainability and heritage for decades, and Jashita firmly established its eco credentials when it was built. Water saving policies are in place, and guests can refill their non-plastic bottles from dispensers around the property. Locals are employed, and artisans have filled the hotel with their work.
