Hôtel Christiania

Hôtel Christiania

The Hôtel Christiania has been run by the Bertoli family since its inception in the 1940s, and it continues to be a grande dame of the village to this day. Standing at the foot of the slopes, with its traditionally Alpine façade, it offers guests an authentic ski lodge experience, where the service is second to none. It is both elegant and refined, and with its superb location, just a stone’s throw from the lifts, it rightfully remains one of Val d’Isère’s most popular places to stay. Indeed, guests come back year after year.

rooms

Traditionally styled, with pine trim, carved furniture and thick carpets, the rooms and suites are cosy and welcoming. Most feature a balcony, and views are of the slopes or the village. The Traditional Rooms are perfect for two, and feature a double or twin beds. They can also interconnect with another room for families. The larger Superior Rooms have a seating area – the Alpine Room is our favourite. Larger still are the Junior Suites, which can accommodate up to three guests.

The Family Rooms and Suites come with a bunk cabin, or a second room on a mezzanine floor, and are perfect for families with children up to the age of 12.

food

Start the day with the perfect breakfast for a day on the slopes –delicious and plentiful buffet style with a very good selection of hot dishes. Pop back for lunch on the terrace when it’s sunny, and enjoy a traditional menu at dinner, at white linen clad tables and with an excellent wine list. Most of the ingredients are sourced locally, and there’s a definite nod to the Mediterranean.

activities

Val d’Isère remains one of Europe’s best ski destinations, and with the Christiania being at the foot of the slopes, you have the entire Espace Killy at the tips of your skis. Experts will be off on the first lift, and those needing a bit of tuition can book it all through the hotel concierge. The resort is home to a number of other Alpine pursuits – paragliding, husky sledding and cross country skiing – and there’s the ice rink close by.

It’s an ideal resort for non-skiers too, with the village full of boutique shops and walking trails. And there’s a very tempting Spa at the hotel, with a pool, sauna and hammam, where therapists offer bespoke treatments – always a treat for weary limbs at the end of the day.

family

The hotel is very popular with families, especially those with younger children. During the French school holidays, there’s a supervised kid’s club between 5.15 pm to 9.45 pm, every day except Saturday (for children between five and ten), whilst babysitting services are available at all times, and the restaurant is very accommodating towards younger palates. There’s a playroom and a games room; many of the rooms interconnect and cots are easily provided.
