Maslina Resort – Hvar, Croatia
Few hotels can boast their own bay, and when it comes to location, Maslina’s spot on the edge of the Adriatic, surrounded by lush pine forest, is truly spectacular. Hvar itself is as unspoilt as it comes, and the architecture of the hotel lets it blend into the landscape, nestling into the hillside down to the sea. The interiors are a visually stunning mix of local stone, iroko wood with terracotta and brushed brass, and a striking glass frontage making maximum benefit of the vista – all imbuing a sense of harmony and balance.
Maslina is a remote luxe hideaway, with outstanding service and an informal atmosphere. You feel a million miles from anywhere, as you relax on the terraces and in the gardens, and what’s more, the service is first class.

From the handmade soaps, to the Cocomat mattresses, from the fresh juices in the minibar to the hanging chairs on the balconies and terraces, every minute detail has been thought about at Maslina. But what really sets the resort apart, is the exceptional views of the Adriatic and Maslinica Bay from each and every room and suite. The neutral palettes and décor are relaxing, and the bathrooms are large and contemporary.
Nestled along the shore, there are also a selection of private villas, all with heated infinity pools and gardens, professional kitchens and the option of private dining.
Delicious Mediterranean cuisine with contemporary influences is served in Maslina’s restaurant, with its cool interior and sunny terrace. All the produce is local and seasonal, with many of the ingredients fresh from the hotel’s garden. There is also a very extensive wine list with Croatian, new and old world wines. Down at the A Bay Beach Bar, you’ll find breakfast and trattoria style lunches, tapas later on, and there’s also a poolside menu service.
In the evening, the outdoor lounge of the bar is the place to relax with something cold before dinner. For guests staying in the villas, there’s the option of private dining too.
This is a place to explore, both on and off shore. Hvar is home to no less than six UNESCO World Heritage sites, beginning with the ancient Greek island capital of Stari Grad. The Dalmatian coastline is rugged and beautiful, with crystal clear coves and bays and lapped by gentle waters. Swim, paddleboard, kayak, kitesurf, windsurf or sail – the water is perfect.
Inland, there are plenty of trails meandering around the island, through olive groves, pine forests and lavender fields, and if you climb to the Hvar Fortress, you’ll be rewarded with far reaching views over the town and the sea. During the summer there are numerous festivals on the island, so you may come across one or two. The hotel’s sommelier runs regular wine tasting and winery tours for anyone interested in viticulture. Which of course, we are! The uber chic Pharomatiq Spa uses treatments based on many of the plants found on Hvar, and this is where you will truly experience the resort’s philosophy of “mindful luxury”. The Spa specialises in restorative experiences, so book into a yoga or meditation session, or their signature Wellness Immersion Programme. And when you’ve done all this, there’s the sandy beach just a short walk away and the two hotel pools for simply doing nothing.
There’s a children’s playroom, as well as a dedicated space with water elements, climbing wall and a Kid’s Club with a range of activities. Babysitting is also available. The boardroom doubles as a cinema for family movies.
