Hotel das Cataratas – Brazil
The only hotel within the Iguazu National Park, das Cataratas boasts front row seats looking out over the falls – one of the world’s most magnificent spectacles. It’s an architectural gem, a 1950s Portuguese hacienda style retreat, surrounded by manicured gardens and lush rainforest. And it has service to match, with a highly attentive and friendly team.
Take a wander around the expansive grounds and you’ll encounter coatis by the tennis courts, toucans and capuchins in the trees, and beyond, take advantage of all the experiences on offer. The hotel exudes a refined and relaxed atmosphere, but it’s the location that makes it unique. Guests can enter the park before it opens each morning, and after it closes, when you’ll have the falls to yourself.

Timelessly elegant, the rooms and suites breathe old style glamour, with polished wood floors, cane furniture, crisp white linen and Portuguese tiled bathrooms. Some look out over the gardens and others across the rainforest. Book a Deluxe Falls View Room, for the best view in the house, or a Junior Pool Suite that comes with a private garden, if you like a lot of space. Families are made to feel right at home in one of the Two or Three Bedroom Suites.
food
Enjoy gourmet dining in the heart of the rainforest, with a choice of two restaurants. Y celebrates Brazilian cuisine, with a highly creative menu and beautifully presented dishes. The terrace at Y is one of the most incredible places for an early evening caipirinha, as the mist from the falls rises in front of you. For an elegant lunch, head to Ipê Restaurant by the pool, with its mouthwatering à la carte menu. There are two atmospheric bars, and picnics can be organized in the grounds.
family
From guided walks in the park along raised walkways, to an electric jeep ride through the rainforest, and a visit to Parque das Aves – the continent’s largest bird breeding sanctuary – there are numerous activities that will leave children spellbound. Some of the more adventurous activities are only available to children over the age of 12.
sustainability
The hotel works very closely with the local community – many of whom are employed here – and supports wildlife protection with its close links to the Onças do Iguaçu project. Energy and resources are managed and conserved carefully and a recycling programme is in place.
additional
Spread across the Argentinian and Brazilian border, the Iguazu Falls are made up of a series of 275 cascades – the largest on Earth – dropping over 80 metres. Hotel das Cataratas has a wealth of activities for exploring the park and seeing this magnificent spectacle. Twin-engine boats take guests on an exhilarating ride along the river to the falls, or for an aerial view, book a helicopter trip to see them from both side of the border.
There’s canyoning in the Salto Macuco waterfall close by and a chance to ride the rapids in an inflatable. There are plenty of trails that you can walk or cycle, or for an even more relaxing pursuit, try the forest bathing. A natural Spa experience like no other.
