We’ve yet to meet anyone who’s returned from the Maldives willingly. They’ve had to be dragged from this island paradise and onto the awaiting seaplane. However, we have met those who were wondering what all the fuss was about (we can’t imagine why), but the instant they stepped onto the pristine white coralline beach, never looked back.
Read on to see why you must holiday here at least once in your lifetime.
THE MALDIVES IS 50 SHADES OF BLUE…
Strung out like sparkling jewels, the 1192 islands that make up the Maldives have some of the most incredible beaches in the entire Indian Ocean. And if you’re after unadulterated barefoot luxury, and really getting as far away from it all as possible, it’s just a question of which atoll or island to choose. The impossibly turquoise waters which rarely drop below 25°C, and which you can dip your toes into straight from your overwater villa, are some of the clearest you’ll ever see. And Maldivian hospitality takes everything to the next level. Why stop at five stars?
WITH A MARINE LIFE ALL THE COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW…
There are few places in the world where’ll you find such a diverse marine ecosystem, with 187 species of coral, over 1100 species of fish (double the number of most dive sites) mangroves and seagrass beds. Five of the world’s seven species of sea turtles live in these waters, together with 21 species of dolphins and whales. Divers and snorkellers come from every corner of the planet just to experience it, and if you’re thinking of doing your PADI, then you’ll be starting at the top.
THE BEACHES…
You will undoubtedly, spend many hours on an idyllic stretch of sand, either with a book, possibly a masseuse, or just simply staring out over your paradisiacal surroundings. But don’t think that’s all there is to do. We’ve talked about the exceptional diving, but how about swimming with manta rays and whale sharks? Or let yourselves be whisked off by motorboat or yacht to a deserted island with a picnic. A sunset dhow cruise is wildly romantic, topped possibly only by dinner for two by candlelight on a private beach. Deep sea fishing will take you further out into the ocean, or you may prefer to stay local and kayak around your island home.
THE BAREFOOT LUXURY ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS… TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES AND STEP THIS WAY
Think dreamy overwater villas with plunge pools and glass floors, and beach cottages tucked amongst the rainforest, with ocean vistas and just the seductive sound of gently lapping waves – nowhere does it quite like the Maldives. The luxury is lavish and the style, unstinting. You really do sometimes need to pinch yourself. These islands naturally lend themselves to romantic sojourns, and choosing the right resort for a honeymoon or some grown-up ‘you’ time can often need some help.

One of our favourites for couples has to be Gili Lankanfushi. With just 45 thatched overwater villas with roof terraces for private dining or sleeping under the stars, and ladders dropping down into the lagoon – some only reachable by boat – they have honeymoon written all over them. The resort has a resident marine biologist and its eco credentials are beyond impressive. |
The Maldives are also one of the best family playgrounds you can find. Most resorts have exceptional (and complimentary) kids clubs, making them a win win all round. Families love COMO Maalifushi for its low key and understated sophistication. The island itself has a rainforested heart and its very own house reef. Zen like overwater villas and beach suites cocoon you, whilst the castaway picnic will become a cherished memory. | ![]() |
THE INCREDIBLE FOOD… FRESH FROM THE OCEAN
You know that food comes high on our list of priorities, and believe us when we say, that the Maldives are also a gourmet’s paradise. Their creole style of cooking, is fused with Indian, Sri Lankan, South Asian and even Mediterranean influences, rich with seafood and tropical fruits including coconut, mangoes and pineapples. Each resort also comes with an exceptional choice of international restaurants with chefs from around the world bringing their unique expertise to the tiny islands.
IT’S THE PERFECT PAIRING WITH SRI LANKA
Of course, you can always add the Maldives to an extended itinerary – on the way or on your return. The islands hang just west and south off of Sri Lanka – another jewel of a destination. Immerse yourself in the Cultural Triangle, relax in colonial style boutique chic in a tea plantation, track elephants and leopards, then round it all off with a well-deserved dose of luxury beach time. Swaying palms and a private butler are non-negotiable!
We really hope this might have whetted your appetite for a slice of tropical paradise. Our Sailing and Islands expert Clare knows the Maldives like the back of her hand, and would only be too happy to talk to you further about which resort might be best, or when to go.
