Alps vs Dolomites

If you’re a keen skier, chances are you’ve already got your favourite mountain range. But if you’re looking to mix things up a bit, or just fancy a change of scenery (literally), then let’s talk about the Alps vs. the Dolomites. Both are incredible, but they offer quite different experiences on and off the slopes. Here’s what you need to know before choosing your next trip.

THE DOLOMITES – JAW-DROPPING BEAUTY

Let’s start with the obvious: the Dolomites are simply stunning. The dramatic, jagged rock formations are a serious ‘wow’ moment – think sunset-pink cliffs towering above perfect pistes. If you’re someone who loves an Insta-worthy ski trip, this is the place to be. While the Alps are, of course, beautiful, the Dolomites have that extra bit of magic that makes you stop and stare.

THE ITALIAN FOOD – A STEP ABOVE

If you’re all about the food, the Dolomites will steal your heart. The Italian influence means next-level cuisine, often at a fraction of the price of French resorts. Here, you don’t just plan your ski day around the runs – you plot it around where you’ll stop for coffee, where you’ll have lunch, and which mountain hut you’ll hit for a well-earned après-ski Aperol Spritz. Priorities, right?

THE SKIING – WHAT TO EXPECT

Skiing in the Dolomites is fantastic, but there are a few things to consider. Many resorts sit at a lower altitude than the Alps, so if you’re thinking of a late-season trip (Easter skiing, for example), the Alps may be a safer bet for snow reliability. On-piste, the runs are brilliant, with impeccable snow management – even in low-snow years, the slopes are in top condition. However, if you’re after super-challenging terrain, you may find the Dolomites a little more forgiving. Having skied the Sella Ronda and Madonna, we found that many of the black runs felt more like reds, and a fair few reds could have been blues.

That said, the Dolomites deliver in other ways: the slopes might not be as long as some Alpine giants, but they make up for it with breathtaking scenery, varied terrain, and a more relaxed, less hectic vibe.

LIFT SYSTEMS – A SMALL DOLOMITE DRAWBACK

The lift connections in the Dolomites are good, but they’re not quite on the same level as, say, the 3 Valleys in France. If seamless, ultra-fast lift systems are a priority for you, the Alps might have the edge. But if you don’t mind taking it a little slower and soaking up the scenery, it’s a small compromise.

DOLOMITE BONUS: A CITY BREAK ADD-ON

One of the huge perks of choosing the Dolomites is the easy access to some of Italy’s most charming cities. Why not tack on a night in Venice or Verona before or after your ski trip? Skiing and a cultural getaway in one – now that’s a holiday upgrade.

THE ALPS – CLASSIC AND RELIABLE

The Alps have long been the gold standard for European skiing, and for good reason. If you love long, challenging runs with reliable snow conditions, the Alps rarely disappoint. The higher altitude means that even in late-season, you’re likely to find great conditions, making Easter skiing a safe bet.

For those who love a mix of on-piste and off-piste adventure, the Alps have some of the best backcountry skiing in the world. The infrastructure is also world-class, with seamless lift systems that make getting around an absolute breeze. If you’re all about efficiency and maximising your time on the slopes, the Alps win hands down.

Après-ski in the Alps is legendary too – think buzzing bars, live music, and ski boots stomping on wooden tables long after the lifts have stopped running. If a lively atmosphere is what you’re after, the Alps deliver every time.

THE VERDICT

If yo’ure after epic, long runs and high-altitude skiing, the Alps might be the better fit. But if you’re craving jaw-dropping scenery, world-class food, and a more relaxed (and arguably more stylish) ski experience, the Dolomites should be at the top of your list. Either way, you can’t go wrong – but if you’ve always stuck to the Alps, it might just be time to branch out and experience something new.
