Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort – Thailand
There are few places in the world where you can see three countries from your bedroom window. And even fewer where you can spend the night in a “jungle bubble” watching elephants wander slowly past. This luxury hilltop retreat unfolds across 160 acres of bamboo forest in the Golden Triangle, with resplendent views of the canopy, the Mekong and Buddhist chedis, and is home to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephants Foundation’s rescued elephants.
A stay here offers a glimpse into life in northern Thailand, with a host of unique and unforgettable experiences, in a very relaxing atmosphere. It’s the perfect choice for families and honeymooners.

Whether you stay in a room or a suite, they all share the same fabulous lush forest views towards the border. With a mix of teak panels and floors, hill tribe fabrics and local Lanna elements, they evoke the age of the explorer. Rooms can take an extra bed for a child, and the exceptionally spacious suites are ideal for families – most of which have a private plunge pool. The Mekong Safari Tent is a luxury safari style suite set up on the hillside – a perfect honeymoon retreat.
For a truly unique experience, book a Jungle Bubble (with spacious decking and a plunge pool) for a night – a transparent sphere for observing the friendly pachyderms close up.
food
Dining at this all-inclusive resort is definitely part of the experience. Sala Mae Nam serves excellent Thai and international cuisine, whilst Samsarn specialises in dishes celebrating the culinary heritage of Northern Thailand, Laos and Myanmar – and shouldn’t be missed – it is delicious. There’s adventurous dining too, with a treetop experience – lunch 52 metres above the grasslands and private dining on the banks of the Ruak river or in a terraced rice paddy.
activities
To stay here is to experience a whole different side of Thailand. From here you can cross the border for a day into Myanmar and Laos, or explore the old Lanna capital Chiang Saen. The resort organises Golden Triangle excursions – a boat trip up the Ruak river, taking in some of the local Buddhist chedis and ancient ruins. And back in the resort itself, there are Thai cookery classes, kick boxing lessons, a thrilling side car adventure around the grounds and beyond, and of course, a first class Spa.
However, it’s the interaction with the elephants that will be the most memorable. Observing these magnificent giants in their natural environment, guests can walk with them and their mahouts, watching them splash in the river, and learn about their lives and behaviour. You just can’t bring one home!
family
Every child will want to foster one of the elephants – this is a truly magical place for families. The resort has curated a list of experiences perfect for younger guests, there are special menus in the restaurants and stunning family suites. Some of the experiences come with an age limit.
sustainability
First and foremost, the resort works closely with local organisations to support elephant welfare and conservation – with guests’ stays playing a big part. And with their jungle location – the lungs of the world – the Anantara group takes their environmental policies very seriously – reducing CO2 emissions, meeting reduced energy targets, responsibly managing waste and banning single use plastic. Local education is also prioritized.
