Anantara Chiang Mai Resort – Thailand

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort – Thailand

Built in the grounds of the old British Consulate, on the banks of the Mae Ping river, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort is a peaceful and understated sanctuary. Minimalist in design, it has Lanna and Thai influences, with airy open plan living opening out onto neat landscaped gardens and lily ponds. And hidden behind a bamboo wall, it feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city on the other side. Stay here for the exceptional Spa and the curated experiences in Chiang Mai and beyond. Or just enjoy the very tranquil setting and fabulous Thai service by the pool.

rooms

The rooms and suites are all clean lines and refined design, with the inside and outside seamlessly flowing. Dark teak floors and light wood paneling contrast cleverly with crisp white linen, and the integrated bathrooms feature large soaking tubs. The larger suites can accommodate families, some coming with a private courtyard and plunge pool. For their soothing location, we highly recommend the Riverfront Suites.

food

The restaurant The Service at 1921 House, is a grill house in the former consulate building, with walls adorned with secret service nostalgia. For flavourful Northern Thai, Vietnamese and Sichuan cuisine, book a table at the Bodhi House, right by the river. The hotel serves a spectacular afternoon tea, so you may not have room for dinner, and can also dine aboard a river cruise right from the hotel’s own jetty.

activities

This is a supremely relaxing base from which to explore the highlights of northern Thailand and see the sights of Chiang Mai. The resort organises guided tours of the city and beyond, as well as offering a number of curated experiences, including visits to an elephant sanctuary, or a hot air balloon trip over the forest. Hop into a Tuk-Tuk to see the temples of Chiang Mail, Chinatown and the Night Bazaar, which is only a short distance away.

The highest peak in Thailand, Doi Inthanon is not far and is a popular trek, through lush forest and past waterfalls. Keen golfers might want to try one of the many courses here – the resort will book a teeing off time for you.

In the resort itself guests are offered a wide range of indigenous craft sessions, as well as massage technique classes.  No stay is complete without a visit to the Spa, where you’ll find a number of treatments to make you even more relaxed.

family

There are very good accommodation options for families (cots can also be provided), and this is a relaxing base from which to explore Chiang Mai with your children. However, there are no particular facilities.

sustainability

The entire design of the resort maximises ventilation and shade, thereby reducing energy use. There are sophisticated waste management systems in place, with water recycled for irrigation. Produce is sourced locally; local artisans supported, and the culture heritage of the area is promoted heavily.
