Historical Sites

Jordan has more than its fair share of remarkable places to visit, from Roman amphitheatres and a forum – some of the best outside Rome, to Crusader citadels. The most famous of them all being the “Rose City” of Petra – one of the Seven Wonders of the World, carved into the sandstone cliffs – you’ll need at least a day to explore. Equally impressive is the desert castle of Qasr Kharana, with its dramatic wilderness location.

Landscapes

Dramatic and varied, the landscapes of Jordan encompass mountain ranges, desert, fertile valleys and the otherworldly Dead Sea – the lowest sea in the world and the deepest salt lake. The sandstone cliffs are especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset; the Dana Nature Reserve is home to some of the country’s endemic species, and the views from the Mountain Heights Plateau will take your breath away.

Cuisine

The food of Jordan is some of the best in the region, combining traditional Levantine ingredients and methods. Dishes burst with flavour from a mix of herbs and spices – all of which is created to share. The country is one of the world’s largest producers of olive oil, and za’atar, a popular blend if spices, is made from sumac that grows wild. Try Mansaf – the national dish made with lamb, yoghurt, paprika and cumin, and then try to resist a tempting baklava.

Diving

The steep shelf into the Red Sea off the tiny Jordanian coast, offers some of the best diving in the region. Unspoilt coral gardens, reefs and wrecks are all home to a myriad of marine life and visibility is excellent. Aqaba is home to many first rate centres, where beginners can take their first dives, and more experienced divers can explore the top sites. The marine park here offers fabulous snorkelling too.

Adventure

Canyon hiking, sleeping out in the desert in a Bedouin tent, exploring Wadi Rum by jeep, soaking in the Dead Sea, or swimming under a waterfall, are just a taster of what a trip to Jordan can entail. And the best way to experience it all is most definitely a road trip.
