Festivals

There seems to be no end to the spiritual rituals practised by the Bhutanese, and whenever you visit, you’re bound to witness a colour religious festival or two, following centuries of tradition. The heart of the country’s indigenous culture, they’re a vibrant riot of colour.

Temples, Dzongs & Lhakhangs

Often on high ridges, or on the confluence of a river, magnificent religious buildings pepper the Bhutan landscape. From the famous Tiger’s Nest (Taktshang Goemba) to Paro Dzong, many serve as fortresses, and are equally beautiful inside, with intricate carvings and paintings depicting the life of the Buddha.

Trekking

For those with the time, the Trans Bhutan Trail covers the width of the entire country, snaking through extraordinary landscape, sacred sites, through rice paddies and lush forest. For the time pressed traveller, there are multiple options for a day and a night taking you to some of the Bhutan’s most inaccessible, and impossibly beautiful spots.

Carbon Neutrality

Bhutan is the world’s only carbon neutral country, with its dense forests absorbing far more CO2 than it emits. It banned plastic bags at the end of the last century, and a large proportion of the tourist tax is earmarked for conservation projects.

Happiness

In Bhutan, wealth is measured by happiness, and you can’t help but be caught up in the laid back and slow pace of life. Within a very short space of time, you will feel an inner spirituality, as well as being overwhelmed by the friendliness and kindness of the people.
